A 17 year-old model wore a record breaking wedding dress
train of 1.85 miles long last March 20, 2012 in Bucharest, Romania.
Made by the Andree salon, a fashion label in Bucharest, the wedding gown took
100 days, 10 seamstresses and roughly $7,300 to complete. It then surpassed the
previous Guinness World Record made by the Netherlands which was about 1.55
miles long.
The dress was made from 15,420 feet of Italian taffeta, 18
feet of French lace and 147 feet of lining all stitched together. Adding to the
project are 150 spools of thread and almost 2,000 sewing needles in order to
finish this marvel of a creation.
The model, Ema Dumitrescu, then rode a hot air balloon to
let the whole city see its extravagance. It was also the only practical method
of transportation. The floating runway show was held to show off the train that
was said to promote this year’s wedding fair held in Bucharest. From the air,
people clearly saw that the train stretched across the entire city centre of
Bucharest.
The victory was triumphantly sweet in light of the feud
between the Dutch and the Romanians. The Dutch leaders apparently campaigned to
keep Romania out of European Union’s visa-free travel zone. "If the Netherlands does not allow us
into Europe, we'll take them out of the world records book," says Alin Caraman, an organizer of the wedding
gown’s big debut.
