For the first five months of 2010, nearly 74,000 tourist have visited the city, primarily to see the Puerto Princesa Underground River, a consistent top candidate in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign.

The DoT reports also stated that a total of 80 new accomodation facilities are expected to be opened by the end of 2010 to accommodate the growing number of local and foreign tourist visiting various destinations in the country. By 2012, 57 more will be added to the total accomodation facilities in the Philippines.

In a statement, DoT Secretary Joseph 'Ace' Durano said, “The DoT has laid down the foundations for sustained growth in tourist arrivals and investments in select destinations over the past years, creating opportunities for increased local employment and harnessing entrepreneurial capabilities of local government units and the private sector to venture into and create new tourism products and services.”

Sec. Durano added that the full implementation of the Tourism Act of 2009 will strengthen the power of DoT and spearhead the development, promotion, and conservation of the tourism areas in the country.
