Angelika dela Cruz and Non-Showbiz Husband Said “I do’s” in Tagaytay Church Wedding

Veteran actress Angelika dela Cruz (Real name Maria Lourdes Egger Dela Cruz) and husband Orion Casareo exchanged “I do’s” in their church wedding held last December 4, 2009 in Tagaytay City, Cavite.

The two were already civilly married before they had their church wedding. According to Philippine Entertainment Portal, Angelika and Orion were first wed in a civil ceremony on August 19, 2008 in Bicol.

Attended by their family and close friends in the showbiz industry, the two insisted to have a private and intimate wedding ceremony in Tagaytay. Butterscotch was the motif of their wedding and Angelika was the only one wearing white. She wore a wedding gown made by designer Alex Pigao. Inno Sotto, on the other hand, designed their wedding cake from Goldilocks.

Among their principal sponsors include renowned producer Mother Lily Monteverde, Sen. Panfilo 'Ping' Lacson, GMA-7 Assistant Vice President for Drama Lilybeth Rasonable, GMA-7 Program Unit Manager Rams David, Sen. Lito Lapid, actress Nadia Montenegro, GMA Films President Annette Gozon Abrogar, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada at actress Lani Mercado. Angelika and Orion’s son, Gabby, served as their ring bearer.

In an interview in showbiz-oriented talk show Startalk, Mr. and Mrs. Casareo shared how their first met. The two met through a common friend when Orion visited the actress on the set. As Mr, Casareo described it, it was love at first sight. The two officially became a couple on December 4, 2005. A year after, Orion asked her hand in marriage and in August, the two had their civil wedding. The two decided to tie the knot last December 4 in celebration of their fourth anniversary. They chose Tagaytay City because of its romantic ambiance and cool climate. The couple also wanted to have their second honeymoon in the Philippines’ Second Summer Capital.

International Study Show Marriage is Good for the Health

Decided on tying the knot? You may be doing more than committing your life to your partner. A recent international study revealed that getting married is positive for the mental health of both men and women, resulting in reduced risks of the likelihood of most mental disorders such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse

The world-first study, led by clinical psychologist Dr. Kate Scott from the University of Otago Wellington - School of Medicine and Health Sciences, was conducted across 15 countries and 34,493 people. It was based on World Health Organization (WHO) mental health surveys across developing and developed countries in the past decade, and published in the UK journal Psychological Medicine.

“One of the more important findings is that in recent years it has been asserted that marriage is better for men than for women in terms of mental health. This study does not agree with that position. We found that compared to never getting married, getting married is good for both men and women in terms of most mental health disorders.” said Dr. Scott in a press statement.

“What our study points to is that the marital relationship offers a lot of mental health benefits for both men and women, and that the distress and disruption associated with ending marriage can make people vulnerable to developing mental disorders”, she added.

The major international study has been funded by the Ministry of Health , Health Research Council and the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand and carried out in association with the WHO, Harvard University and a number of other organizations internationally.

So go ahead and say ‘I do’, not only to your partner-for-life, but to good health and a great life with your loved one.

Ban on Weddings Held Outside Church Imposed in Manila

Soon-to-wed couples who plan to have their wedding in a garden, hotel, or beach may put their wedding plans on hold as Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales has banned wedding rites from being held outside the churches.

In a circular released recently, Cardinal Rosales said “all Catholic marriages within the Archdiocese of Manila should be held only within the parish churches, except those in “articulo mortis” cases”. By articulo mortis means ‘at the time of death’ or ‘at the point of death’. The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines news site, www.cbcpnews.com, used the religious term in periculo mortis which means ‘in danger of death’.

The Cardinal said he was acting to prevent the sacrament of marriage being ridiculed and to press the observance of “all ecclesiastical laws.”

“I have to ensure that abuses do not creep into ecclesiastical discipline, especially concerning the celebration of the sacrament of marriage”, Cardinal Rosales said.

Title VII Chapter V Canon 1118 does state that wedding should be celebrated in a parish church. However, each bishop may particularize the policy in his diocese.

In an interview over Radio Veritas (DZRV 846kHz) last June 1, 2009, Cardinal Rosales reminded couples to focus on the solemnity of their marriage and avoid placing too much attention on their wedding details. He also reminded soon-to-wed couples of the value of the “mystery of the sacrament.”

A Filipiniana-Themed Wedding for Mar – Korina Nuptial

Contemporary Filipiniana was the theme of the highly anticipated wedding of vice presidential aspirant Senator Manuel ‘Mar’ Roxas II and veteran broadcaster Korina Sanchez last October 27, 2009.

Dubbed by the media as the ‘wedding of the year’, Santo Domingo Church, their ceremony venue, was decorated with the bride’s favorite flowers: sampaguita, white roses, and rosal. Traditional wooden fans were placed at the seats. With the fans were the missalletes with bronze script and inlaid with piña fiber on the cover.

The wedding entourage and guests, composed of prominent personalities from politics, business, and media, were wearing native Filipino attires; Barong Tagalog for the gentlemen and Ternos or Maria Clara gowns for the ladies.

The entourage and guests include former President Joseph Estrada, Sen. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino, Supreme Court Chief Justice Reynato Puno, Chief Justice Artemio Panganiban, United States Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney, ABS-CBN Chairman and CEO Eugenio ‘Gabby’ Lopez III, ABS-CBN President Charo Santos-Concio, GMA Network President Felipe L. Gozon, Kris Aquino-Yap with husband James and son James Jr. Richard Gomez with wife Lucy, and Cesar Montano and wife Sunshine Cruz, among others.

Sen. Roxas wore an organza camisa chino under an embroidered piña barong made by Randy Ortiz. The groom’s barong was inspired by the ones worn by his father, late Sen. Gerardo ‘Gerry’ Roxas.

Korina, on the other hand, wore an intricately embroidered serpentine gown made from woven piña and silk with a 5-meter train. Designed by Pepito Albert and Amir Sali, the gown was made to look old in order to achieve the ‘vintage feel’ which the bride wanted. Korina did not wear a veil, instead, had a loose French twist as her do and wore a payneta (traditional gold comb) adorned with white flowers. As accessory to her bridal gown, she wore heirloom pieces from her deposed parents, Cecilia and Ramon.

More than ten bishops and priest concelebrated the Mass in Filipino. These include Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) President Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, Sorsogon Bishop Emeritus Jesus Varela, San Jose de Antique Bishop-Emeritus Raul Martirez, Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, Fr. Antonio Labiao Jr. and Fr. Carmelo ‘Tito’ Caluag

Archbishop Lagdameo was the main celebrant while Fr. Caluag who delivered the homily.

Philippine Madrigal Singers, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra, Jamie Rivera, Ray Ann Fuentes, Robert Seña, and Basil Valdez performed Filipino and traditional wedding songs during the ceremony.

More than 2,000 guests were present during the wedding ceremony, with 3,000 more watching the couple exchange vows from outside.

After the event, guests were served a simple cocktail composed of stuffed pan de sal and rice cakes. An intimate reception followed at the Bahay na Puti, the Roxases’ ancestral home in Cubao, Quezon City. Staying with their theme, the tables in the reception were adorned with local flowers and accented with gasera (gas lamp) and specialized Venetian mirrors from Pampanga. The couple decided to shun away from the lavish reception they initially planned at the Araneta Coliseum. Instead, they donated the money to various organizations as aid to the victims of typhoon Ondoy.

The couple first met at the National Press Club Awards night back in 1998 and became a couple on May 22, 2002. Mar proposed to Korina on February 14 during their vacation in Cebu. The two publicly announced their engagement last April 25, 2009 at the noontime show, "Wowowee." On June 13, 2009, the senator officially asked for the broadcaster’s hand in marriage in a traditional "pamamanhikan” (asking the hand in marriage) held in Korina's ancestral home in Parañaque City.

Cardinal Rosales Reminded Soon-to-Wed Couples of Marriage Solemnity

Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales called the attention of soon-to-wed couples not to forget the solemnity of their marriage ceremony.

In an interview over Radio Veritas (DZRV 846kHz) last June 1, 2009, Cardinal Rosales noted that couples focus too much of their attention on the wedding details such as invitations, programs ,among other things, and their attention towards the solenmity of the ceremony is lost. “Nababahala ako kasi ang sakramento ng kasal [I am bothered because the sacrament of marriage] is being robbed of its solemnity” said the Manila Archbishop during his interview.

Cardinal Rosales reminded couples, and wedding planners and coordinators, that weddings are “not a production” and reminded soon-to-wed couples of the value of the “mystery of the sacrament.”

Cardinal Rosales also stated that more couples are now opting to have a civil wedding rather than a church wedding because of the increasing cost involved in holding the latter. The Cardinal hopes that wedding suppliers address this issue in any way they could to preserve the sanctity of marriage.

RP Hailed as Asia's Most Popular Destination in World Trade Fair 2009

In the advent of wedding destination, the Philippines has just given soon-to-wed couples from all over the world a better reason why they should hold their special day here. More than its beautiful churches, beaches and sceneries, professional local wedding suppliers, and popular wedding culture, the country has recently been named as the most popular destination in Asia at this year's World Travel Fair (WTF) in Shanghai, China.

Held last April 9 – 11, 2009 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center, the Philippines was recognized as the most popular destination in Asia after a public vote and an evaluation process done by professional jurors from the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and VNU Exhibitions Europe.

In a statement released by the Department of Tourism (DOT), Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ Durano attributed the win to the country's competitive tour pricing, the remarkable progress of the transportation sector, and the Filipino's friendliness and hospitality to visitors.

Furthermore, Sec. Durano said, “the Philippines is one of the fastest growing destinations in China’s outbound travel industry, recording a 74% month-on-month growth rate in visa issuances for February of this year. We are also the nearest tropical beach country for the Chinese, as Manila is only 2 hours away from Guangzhou, while Cebu is only 3 hours away from Shanghai.”

DOT Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque Jr. added that during last year’s World Trade Fair, the Philippines garnered the Best Leisure Destination for Boracay; Top 10 Island Getaways for Chinese Summer Travel for Bohol; the only Asian entry in the list of premier destinations in the acclaimed World Traveller Magazine; and Top 10 Most Searched Destination among Shanghai online users in Baidu, the biggest search engine in China.

Ms. Arlene Alipio, head of DOT Team China, disclosed that the outbound travel of China has been profitable for the country. Ms. Alipio cited that recent statistics from the China National Tourism Administration shows that the number of Chinese travelers reached 34.4 million in the first nine months of 2009.

Meanwhile, Turkey was awarded as The Best Leisure Tour Destination while Switzerland was hailed as the Most Popular Tourism Destination in Europe.

Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos Has Tied the Knot

After months filled with anticipation, celebrity couple Ryan Agoncillo (real name Kristoffer Ryan Agoncillo) and Judy Ann Santos (real name Judy Anne Lumagui Santos) has said their ‘I do’s’ today, April 28, 2009 in a private wedding somewhere in Southern Luzon. The wedding ceremony took place at San Juan Nepomuceno Church in San Juan, Batangas.

According to the article posted at ABS-CBNNews.com, the newlyweds decided to hold their wedding early morning to signify the new start of their relationship as husband and wife. Fr. Tito Caluag served as the celebrant of the Agoncillo-Santos wedding. The report also stated that several showbiz personalities were present in the wedding including Senator Francis Pangilinan, Sharon Cuneta and daughter KC Concepcion, GMA-7 Morning show host Suzy Entrata and husband Paolo Abrera, singer-couple Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid, and directors Joyce Bernal and Rory Quintos.

For the past few weeks, showbiz news reports have released ‘official’ wedding dates of the Ryan Agoncillo-Judy Ann Santos wedding. Showbiz news columnist Dolly Anne Carvajal, in her article yesterday at the Philippine Daily Inquirer stated that the two were bound to tie the knot on May 2, 2009, a Saturday. Carvajal’s undisclosed source said that Ogie Alcasid and Agot Isidro will sing at the wedding rites and the reception is set at Le Souffle in Rockwell Makati.

In their recent interview with the press, the newlyweds have requested to let their wedding be a private event. Close friends and relatives of Ryan and Judy Ann kept mum on the wedding details, especially Judy Ann’s mother, Carol Santos.

Ryan proposed to Judy Ann on her 30th birthday celebration held last May 11, 2008 at the Antulang Beach Resort in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

The two plans to spend their honeymoon in Mexico. Last year, the couple disclosed that they plan to put up a house before they get married.

Travel Tips for Your Destination Wedding

Destination wedding has started to become a trend, especially here in the Philippines. It is where couples decide to hold their wedding in venues outside their hometown and do it in another location of their choice. Popular destinations here in the Philippines include Tagaytay City, Cebu, and Boracay Island, among others.

If you and your partner decide to have a destination wedding, your main concern involves traveling. You and your partner will have to constantly travel, whether to meet with local suppliers or inspect your ceremony and reception venue. In this case, here are some traveling tips for your destination wedding:
  • Familiarize yourself with the landmarks and roads to your wedding ceremony and reception venue as well as the mode of transportation available.Remember, you will be the first person they will call if they need instructions on how to get to your wedding. Though you may provide maps on your invitations, it will still be helpful if you could guide them in looking for the landmarks indicated in your map. If you are getting married somewhere where your guests will have to pass by expressways, like North Luzon Expressway, South Luzon Expressway or Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway, make sure to indicate in your map what exit your guests will have to take.
    TIP:

Your guests may also decide to have a short vacation after your wedding. Try to learn about the places of interest near your venue.
  • Familiarize yourself with important establishment found near your wedding ceremony and reception venue. Important establishments include malls, convenient stores, fast food chains, and restaurants. You or your guests may need to buy something like food or toiletries.
  • Send your guests save-the-date cards and information packets as early as six months in advance. This will allow them to book plane tickets, if needed, reserve hotel rooms, and organize their schedule. Also, this will give them ample time to find their way towards your venue.
    TIP:
In case you will not shoulder your guests’ accommodation, find out the promos and discounts of the hotel where you will stay in and suggest to your guest to book there as well. Some airlines and also offer group discounts.
  • Consider getting local suppliers. It is good to hire local suppliers since travel will not be an issue for them. Unlike suppliers from the metro, it will be very tedious for them to bring their products to your wedding, unless they have a branch there. Also, local suppliers are very familiar with your wedding ceremony and reception, which would allow them to adjust better if something comes up. Then again, do not hesitate to hire suppliers from Manila that you really trust, especially those that are very mobile such as photographers, make-up artists, and wedding coordinators. But once you do, expect to be charged for out of town, travel and accommodation expenses.
  • Travel light. It will be easier for you and you partner if you pack only the things you need for the whole time you will be staying at the hotel, especially during your wedding day. Settle for toiletries in sachets or smaller bottles. Avoid packing too many clothes and bring only that you are sure to wear.
  • Bring basic medicines such as painkillers, anti motion sickness, for tummy aches, and your maintenance drugs, if any. You may not have ample time to scout for a drugstore or a pharmacy when the need arise.
  • Plan your meetings and appointments well. Try to allot one whole day to accomplish your agenda such as meeting with local suppliers or inspecting your ceremony and reception venue. Create a contingency plan just in case something unexpected comes up such as delay of flight schedule, weather, or unavailability of suppliers for meetings.
  • Bring an extra bag. You and your partner may have time to shop before or after your wedding. Your guests may hand out their gifts during your wedding. In any case, an extra bag will help you in packing up excess baggage.
  • List down important local assistance hotlines. During unexpected circumstances, it is best to have a copy of important local numbers such as tourist information and assistance centers, police stations, fire stations, and medical facilities. It would be best to share these contact numbers with your guests.
  • Charge up and load up. Make sure that you charge your phone regularly or have an extra battery with you when you leave the hotel. If you’re using prepaid mobile lines, keep extra call cards in your wallet or bag to avoid having a hard time looking for a load outlet when you run out of load.
  • If in a place where the language or dialect you know is not widely spoken, keep table napkins, business cards or anything with the name of your hotel or venue on it. Also, keep identity cards with you (driver’s license, passport, company ID, etc.). This will help you in asking for instructions should you get lost.

RP Wedding Industry To Benefit from Global Recession

With the global economic downturn affecting many industries, the local wedding industry is predicting a slow growth. But the local wedding industry has the chance to reap the fruits of recession.

Last February 18-25, 2009, Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Joseph ‘Ace’ Durano invited officers and members of the US-based Association for Wedding Professionals International (AFWPI) for a familiarization tour of some of the wedding and honeymoon destinations in Batangas, Bohol, Cavite, Cebu, and Metro Manila.

Composed of wedding and event coordinators, bridal show producers, professional photographers and videographers, the participants were given a chance to see a typical Filipino wedding featuring a real-life couple and an entire wedding entourage held at the Ocean Pavilion in Shangri-la Mactan Resort and Spa, Cebu City. In Manila, a mini-bridal fair was staged at The Peninsula Manila. The participants in the mini-bridal fair include fashion designer Malou Castillejos, Imacron, Smart Shot Studio, Matus Jewellery, and Penk Ching of Pastry Bin.

During their stay, AFWPI President Richard Markel was amazed on the variety of wedding and honeymoon destinations in the country and their affordability compared to weddings done in the United States. In an interview with the Philippine News Agency, Mr. Markel shared, “A basic wedding in the US costs around $ 50,000 (roughly Php. 2,400,000.00) while in the Philippines you can hold weddings for less than half of that, with a honeymoon holiday thrown in the package.”

DOT Sec. Durano aims to tap the North America market by presenting the Philippines as the best option for destination weddings. “This is a specialized market with big returns, because couples bring along 50 to 100 guests who stay here for 5-12 days for the celebration. A lot of couples in the US have already cancelled their weddings this year due to the recession. And most of them are looking at holding more affordable weddings in nonetheless romantic, exotic, and memorable destinations like the Philippines,” added the Secretary.

Meanwhile, DOT Team North America Head Corazon Apo Jorda also acknowledged, “Weddings here come in neat little packages unlike in the US where the couple has to go through each tiny detail and buy everything, even the utensils.”

Jeff Sharpe of Sharpe Photographers, one of the photographers who joined the familiarization tour, shared he hope to entice his US clients to have their weddings and honeymoons in the Philippines through the photos he took during the tour.

Wedding suppliers who joined the familiarization tour were also brought to some of the popular wedding and reception locations in Manila. These include St. James Church in Ayala, Alabang, The Glass Garden in Pasig, Fernbrook Gardens in Las Piñas, Sonya’s Garden and Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, and the Caleruega Transfiguration Chapel in Batangas.

Swept Away: Nurse Proposed to Flight Attendant at NAIA

Armed with a bouquet of calla lily and yellow roses, five members of the Angono National Symphonic Band, and a diamond engagement ring, Filipino nurse Eugene Padua popped the question to his long-time girlfriend Marian Ocampo, a flight attendant, at her workplace - Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

The proposal was romantically arranged two days before Valentine’s Day. According to the interview of Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI) with Connie Bungag, Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) media affairs officer after, Ms. Ocampo arrived aboard Flight OZ-701 from Seoul, South Korea of Asiana Airlines. She was escorted by airport policeman, Lt. Joselito Mutya, to the curbside where Mr. Padua was waiting for her.

As soon as he saw her, Mr. Padua went down on one knee and popped the question while the Symphony Band played “Swept Away” by Christopher Cross, the couple’s theme song. Nearby, friends of the couple unfurled a tarpaulin with the words “Will you marry me?” and a photo montage of the two. With such a romantic gesture form her beloved, who could resist saying yes?

Some of the bystanders were teary-eyed as the events unfold, according to Ms. Bungag. The crowd insinuated the soon to wed couples to kiss.

In the same interview of PDI, Mr. Tirso Serrano, MIAA assistant general manager for corporate development and public affairs, said that this is not the first time someone proposed at the airport. Mr. Serrano shared that a nephew of a former governor proposed to his girlfriend who was arriving at the NAIA Centennial Terminal 2 last September 2008. MIAA General Manager Alfonso Cusi extends his well wishes to the soon to wed couple.

The groom-to-be told reporters after his proposal that they plan to get married next year. Best wishes!

RP Foreign Visitors at High for 2008

Based on the latest data from the Department of Tourism (DOT), a total of 3.14 million foreign tourists visited the Philippines last year.

The increase is attributed to the increase of tourist arrivals from European countries such as Russia, which rose up to 34%, France by 19%, and United Kingdom by 10%. On the other hand, visitors from United Arab Emirates and Vietnam also increased by 28%.

South Koreans are still the most frequent visitors of the country, with 611,629 arrivals in 2008. Next in line are USA (578,246 arrivals), and Japan (359,205 arrivals).

In addition, the department worked closely with Mandarin Airlines to increase chartered flights between Taipei to Kalibo, Taipei to Cebu, and Kaoshiung to Cebu.

Other countries that posted significant increase in tourist arrivals are Australia, Hong Kong, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Germany, and Indonesia.
